Empower Our Youth Committee
Mission and Goals
MissionGoals
- Our mission is to ensure all youth in the Central Okanagan are safe in our community, schools, and on the streets.
- We believe all youth have a right to be accepted, recognized, appreciated, and honoured for who they are without prejudice.
- Develop the Empower Our Youth Committee by ensure ongoing youth participation and support.
- Community Partnerships
- Ensure that LGBT issues are a part of Family Life Education Program in the schools.
- Work with committees such as the Safe Schools Committee and the Youth Suicide Prevention Committee.
- Educate and receive support and input from Kelowna's Faith
- Based Community.
- Educate and receive support and input from public sector agencies, social services, and law enforcement.
- Educate and receive support and input from Business Community.
- Develop and complete a needs assessment for local youth on safety and diversity issues.
- Training and Skills Building
- Conduct sensitivity and training workshops for youth service providers, educators, health care workers, parents, the gay community, and the community at large on Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgendered (LGBT) issues.
- Provide training and skills building on critical issues in counseling in youth sexuality, including LGBT youth issues for professional counsellors.
- Encourage and support the establishment of a Parents and Friends of Lesbians and Gays
- Create awareness on the sexual exploitation of youth including LGBT Youth
- Work towards a local organization incorporating a gay youth group into their mandate
- Develop a resource library on sexuality and gay youth issues.
- Encourage the development of an after school gay youth group for ages 13-18.
- Encourage the ongoing development of a Drop-In for LGBTQ Youth and their friends, ages 13-25 (including OUC Students).
